O.K. I've had this thing bounceing around for about twenty years, I don't even remember where I got it. I have showed it to hundreds of collectors and no one has been able to give me a definite answer as to what it is.
It is made out of solid pewter and seems to have some age on it. There are no marks on it. It's like a bottle, but I don't know what it held. The biggest mystery is the weird loop on the cap. It is very heavy. It is about 11" tall and 4" wide.

    Unsolved Mystery

Looks like an early canteen, the loop would be used for a lanyard to the belt or neck I would think, maybe some of the War Between The States experts on here can shed some more light.

Don't think they had very many options, they tried a lot of things, may even be older than that.

It's definaly a personal water bottle. Sigg still makes one very similar under a different label. these have been produced since 1916. These are favored by mountain climbers and have been for years. the hole in the cap is use for a karabiner clip.

i have seen one of these before. i remember that it smelled like gasoline. personal water bottles could have been used for this purpose, i suppose. but if i was real thirsty, it could be a real bummer!
