Very light item, about 6" long... very old type of case or holder or holster of some type? Seems like it's composed of very worn leather.

This was given to us in a box of very old items.

Can anyone help with a description of this?

    Thanks!

Could be some type of holster for a small 4" revolver. Just a guess.

@OldTownGal, I've seen several pipe holsters in my travels, none just like that one, though. When I was _very_ young everyone smoked. The style looks similar to pouches I remember seeing on a fishermen's straps when I was young. I think it would not look out of place on the sort of gear you'd see in photos of people wearing expedition gear before web gear was invented, back when everyone wore Sam Browne-style leather gear.

Okay... so... I stopped in to see a guy at an antique shop and showed this to him...

He feels it held scissors, and other sewing notions. He noticed the felt lining inside, which would have protected 'fancy scissors' he said. "Around 1930 was when felt was added to this case... women were always sewing back then, and using real gem (diamond, ruby, emeralds) handled scissors and fancy thimbles, etc...
      Interesting...

That's sure a possibility. How about a side view to see the thickness?
