My mother tells us she bought this lamp in the early 60s from the Army and Navy Store in Victoria or John Lewis (??) ...she also informs us that she saved up and paid nearly £40 for it (poss some financial creativity on her behalf as no mention of shillings or pence)
height 18 in
diameter 31 in
Can anyone give more info on this item?
Can you post some pucs of the bottom. It doesn't look like it started out as a lamp.
I love the graphics on it!
hi, sure have added one of the base, many thanks
Thank you PostCardCollecter
I don't think you are going to like my comment but here goes. I think that yhus is a "made" lamp from an oriental vase. Most oriental vases simply do not have a top like that. They are more closed in with the body leading the the light switch. Somebody had an oriental vase or jar that they thought would look good as a lamp. This is jyst my take on your piece and I am sorry if you are upset. However your mother's choice was well worth it if it has brought happiness to those around it.
On the contrary, no offence is taken from your comments...it has the family status of 'something nasty in the woodshed' and is loved only by my mother
After a polish, rewired, a black silk shade with harp (so a Chinese finial could be added), I think it would be presentable and very salable. I think someone would be happy to own it.

I think it is a great looking piece myself, however I agree it is from a vase and made into a lamp, she couldn't have bought this new...
From the looks of the wiring, I would say maybe the early 50's, at least in Canada Lol. The vase may be perfectly ok, if it was taken apart.
The graphics are awesome :-)
Well I'm glad. With a little care and cleaning, any oriental arts collector would like to have it. I believe the pattern is called "Royal Procession".
Forgot to welcome you to CW.:-)
Thank you robin56 :) ...and thanks to all of you for your comments.
Was 'Royal Procession' a popular - common design?
I am not sure if it is common but I showed it to a friend if mine and she said it was popular in the 40s and 50s to have this in your home.
Thank you :)
