Hi I purchased this trunk for a pretty good bargain shall we say! I get the feeling its very old, with some new screws been added over the years gone by.

    The dimension of it are L50cm x H21cm X D 30cm

I have tried to do a bit of research to see if there is anything resembling it, but i can't find much at all. The lock mechanism seems to be very unique in itself.

I noticed this morning some markings on the lid at the bottom right hand corner they look a bit faint (there is a pic of these) It looks to me like it says R S - Co. There are also some markings above these, but i cant make these ones out.

I would love to learn a little more about the history of this trunk as i had intended to restore it, but i don't want to affect the value. If anyone could possibly tell me a little more information i would really appreciate it.

Thanks a fabulous carpenter's trunk you came across! The front latch/lock is unique and has a great industrial design feel to it. I think the lettering on the lid was probably from a former use -- that the wood on the lid was re-purposed for this trunk -- which was and is a common thing to do. I would speculate a date of around the late 1800's -- open to correction of course. Why that date ? -- Well the corners are not dove tailed which tells me that it came later down the timeline and was utilitarian industrial -- the big screws used would also suggest that time frame. The cast iron handles design comes from an earlier period but were made for a very long time. As to value and refinishing -- bit of a coin toss -- some like the original feel and look -- others prefer to see all the nice wood. I think you should feel free to pursue the look you want as the value is not overly high on this trunk. (and refinishing it in my opinion would not change value much) Well a lovely chest -- thank you so much for the post and welcome to Collector's Weekly!
