I've seen alot of Lubiana porcelain around here and most of it is, more or less, standard fare. "KÄSIMAAL" is a Finnish word which does not seem to have an English translation. I spotted this hand painted napkin holder earlier this week inside a huge cabinet in a local second hand shop. Unusual, since much of Lubiana seems to be transfer printed. I haven't found another one like this so far, but it's not for want of looking! LOL

I wonder if the design represents anything in particular. This is an older piece in perfect condition.

Ha,Lubiana - something familiar ! I didn't even know they still exist.I googled them and find a catalogue where your napkin holder is in white version.I think they only made items and it was painted somewhere else ,eg in Finland by Ars...etc.

Ivonne - that makes total sense. I have seen the white version but never thought about it being painted in another country. How interesting! That would explain the Finnish writing on the bottom. I wonder why that was done. You have solved the mystery - THANKS!!

This napkin holder was painted in Estonia, in Tallinn Art Products Factory "ARS". "KÄSIMAAL" means hand painted and it is an estonian word, in finnish hand painted is "KÄSINMAALATTU". Quite similar words! :) For more information:

I tried to find some information about this factory (in estonian: Kunstikombinaat ARS) in english, but nothing was found.
