This metal box, addressed to a returning WWI soldier in Wisconsin, matches the Model T "rumble box." It makes sense that an outbound soldier might re-purpose the strong metal box that rode on the back of the family car as a suitcase for going to war. I've seen an image of a similar box on the back of a Rolls Royce. Can anyone confirm that this once rode the roads? Or point me toward some resources that might help with identification?
Not to disappoint you... but... this trunk was not made for the back of a vehicle. This is and English made metal trunk for storage -- they are common enough. They are still desirable in England today. As you can see on your fourth picture the shape and style of a trunk made for a car was very specific. Now someone could strap this on to the back of a car -- but this is not a car trunk. Hope this helps and welcome to Collectors Weekly!
Wonderful! I'd rather be corrected than wrong any day! Just love and appreciate your comment, and adds to the story. An US soldier sends an English-made trunk to himself in Wisconsin. I know exactly what you mean.... I posted a trunk I thought was labeled as an Italian rifle box only to be informed that the word on the box was similar to rifle but actually meant laxative! Oh boy did I have a good chuckle on that... still have it posted I think. Glad you are enjoying this forum... I learn something new every time I log on... This trunk is an awesome piece of history -- good luck on the family search.
