Looks like a nice old 1890's trunk -- dome top. Whenever I see this form I usually think "zinc covered" - but alas the covering that was on it has been removed. The slat clamps seem a bit oversized for the trunk -- you will notice on your side picture that one clamp is missing and there is a steel angled replacement -- just that usually this style of trunk has all of those as slat clamps. This is a fairly common style of trunk and without a label we would not know what company made it. I have a trunk with similar hardware on it (cast iron) and they do shine up nicely. http://cf.collectorsweekly.com/stories/gXR0MxRZiQ-zVjV-KJlUrg.jpg
A "steamer trunk" would be a smaller half size trunk. Hope this helps a bit and welcome to Collector's weekly.
I really appreciate your help in identifying it.. I look forward to possibly restoring it or getting it restored just simply to have a show piece.
