    Hello,
I am attempting to find any eduacated guesses as to the specific axe/mattock this may be. I do know the handle is not of the period when it was forged. It is a tobacco stick. The old gentleman I purchased this from said that he believed it was for digging ginseng, I have my doubts but still purchased it for its charactor.
I appreciate any insight. Thanks, Dan Burman

It is an adz. The cutting edge and handle would indicate to me probably used for mortise gutting on post and beam. Timber adz would have a much different and heavier handle and a wider cutting edge. A bowl adz would be the opposite, smaller in both dimensions.

Thanks for your post. Does this look like something from the 18th century? It would be neat if this could have been used to build old settlement houses in early Kentucky. I did look at this with a ten power B&L loop and seen what could possibly be an old stamp on the side-but difficult to make out-may be accidental. I paid $25 for it, Hope I didnt lose to much $$ Thanks fhrjr2!
