Hoipolloi

Now then,
I just know you'll all know what this is, and despite puzzling over it for days and scouring the old Interweb, I haven't got a Scooby-doo!
I have some guesses though. It is 8cm long, and just over 1cm across. (The coin is a UK £1 coin). It has a bit on the back (I don't know what it's called) that I'm guessing hooks into something like a pocket and it has the word "NATIONAL" stamped into the top. The inverted commas are there too.
I'm guessing it's a gentleman's accessory, maybe something to hang from a suit pocket? I poked about inside with a cotton bud (Q-Tip to my trans-Atlantic friends) and it came out dusty but not dirty. The inside is lined with little spikes so my guesses are its either a flower holder or a pen holder. Or maybe it's an Iron Maiden for 'The Little People' that live under my skirting boards? Haha.
Other than those ideas the only "NATIONAL" links I could think of were our National Health Service (NHS) or The Grand National (Big, tough annual horse race).
Come on, put me out of my misery...please?
In a facetious mood... When encounter such a mystery thingy I assume it is an old/vintage circumcision tool! ;-D
At least this is a conversation piece, and I wish to be wrong!!!
Lets see what will come out :-P
It's interesting Hoipolloi... Letter opener??
Exist too a "NATIONAL" company:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_(brand)
A bicycle device? :-)
I just remember seeing National cash registers on one of those restoration shows. Maybe it has something to do with that??
Kyratango, hahaha! Brilliant. I might tell my new hubby it is and brandish it when he's been on the Xbox for too long. Hehe x
I thought it might be a sheath??? for a letter opener but the little bit on the back looks designed to hang from something. The spikes inside would grip it but would scratch it too. I'll ask Himself about the bike part; he's a bike retail manager that deals in bikes and a cyclist. He might be able to compare it to a modern equivalent. If it is I'll have to find another fierce looking collectible to threaten him with.
Now, where did I put those hatpins...?
Sorry Rick55, I left your name out in my last comment. Thanks x
Hahaha!!! You could buy this for only 2.97€ :

A door jam ??
Hahaha! Now you're talking Kyratango!! :))
Hi Vetraio50,
I think it's too flimsy for a door jamb. It's hollow and think it would dent.
Thanks though x
Hooray!! I've found it out! It's called a Tussie Mussie and its for wearing a flower stem in on a lapel or to hold a small posy if you're a lady. Like me! Hehe. Funny name though, hmm?
Such a cool unique piece. I want one now. :)
It's fab isn't it? I hadn't realised it came apart and there is a patent number inside. I love a little mystery like this one.
