Summer is always a bit hard on the thrift stores. Everyone is having their own garage sales and not donating as much as they do in the fall and winter. I've been seeing a lot of interesting religious pieces turning up though. Crosses, plaster and porcelain statues of saints and Madonna's are the usual items. This 11 " tall wood crucifix came from Salvation. I found several online and they all agree it's French from around the turn to the early part of the 20th century. There are no maker marks or labels. It has a black painted finish with a metal corpus with bone accents on the ends of the cross. The top one was missing so I raided the old button box to try and find something suitable to mimic the other two. I found a nice old shell button but an even nicer crown shaped brass one with a black glass bead in the middle. I think it looks like it's always been there ! It even matches some of the detail on the scroll nailed to the cross. Not a bad restoration if I do say so myself. -Mike-
Thanks Ken :)....yep typical mid-Summer doldrums.
Oh I do like this, I like religious objects but especially ornate crosses. Nice find, Mike, and nice repair. :)
Thanks Katherine :)...I've been influence by Kyra's creativity. So it's been Kyra-tized !
beautiful!!!!
Lovely cross Mike, and great restoration job!
Thanks Rick :)...it did turn out rather well .
I was told by an "expert" in these old French/French Canadian pedestalled crosses that the method to date them is by looking at the feet of Christ. With early crosses, the feet are side by side and each foot is nailed separately. In later ones post 1880's, (such as yours), the feet are overlapped and a single nail is used. Ever since I found out this information, I've been giving these modest Crosses a second look and I find them fascinating. RER(BOB)
