I have two identical vases like that pictured. They have been handed down through at least three generations of family, but I have no idea of their origin, identity, or value. I believe they are bronze and coated black and stand 14 3/8" (36cm) tall. The only identifying marks I have found are embossed into the base (and pictured).
Any help determining their age, origin, and value would be very much appreciated.
Edit: I think the Japanese characters translate to (top to bottom) 'light' and 'one', so maybe variants of those words form the name of the company...?
Lovely Japanese bronze vases!
Hi
These are lovely Japanese bronze vases from the Meiji period, later half of the 19th century through the 1920s. The applied Japanese Rhinocerous Beetles are fantastic. If there are no dents or breaks, they could be worth minimally a couple of thousand $. I cannot read the signature but if it is the right artist, they could be worth more. I hope this helps! Never clean them! The applied patina looks correct. Tom
