I paid for this the other day at a second-hand store near my house. I was on my bike, so said that i would pick it up the next day, but i forgot about it until a week later when i ran into the owner who told me to come and get my pot before she sold it to someone else. She said that there had been a lot of interest in it. It is a beautiful planter - 18 inches wide by 13 inches tall. There is a small, impressed mark on the base - a kanji [i think it's called that]. I'd love to find out more about the piece if i can.
thanks for any info or comments!
someone translated the Japanese on the bottom - it says 'Tachibana-yaki' and i can't find anything about that online.
Beautiful!!
Love this blue, the whole pot is very nice, and I bet ... Heavy :-)
thank you toracat and kyratango! yes, it is a little heavy and just BIG! i found out from the collecting Chinese ceramics FB page that it is actually Japanese hibachi - and a very nice one!

Very Nice !!!!
Persevere on the attribution.
Beautiful form.
thank you vetraio50! i found out that this size hibachi was used to heat a room or small house. smaller sizes were often used to heat kettles for tea or to warm cold hands.
Try http://www.gotheborg.com someone on there might be able to help. Nice piece I can see why people were interested in it. Is it hand painted or a transfer? I need a second-store like that. most of the ones around here have little or no oriental other than modern pieces. Yous look to be a older piece. What did it sell for?
thank you grendel67! it appears to be hand-painted, although i'm not exactly sure how to tell. there are no seams anywhere. i got it for $20. that particular second-hand store has very little that is interesting, but i've found a couple of pretty cool things there.
$20 a very good price for it. One of the my local Antique stores had a set that was similar to your they wanted $800 for those. I think you did good if it is a older piece even if its not really old it still a good price.
thank you grendel67! i've never seen one this size before.
i found some very similar ones to this one on Liveauctioneers. they were going for 200-400 each - at Clars in Oakland.
