What is this

So this is a rocker my now husband bought at goodwill to furnish his then bachelor pad. He for some reason is very attached to it so I agreed, instead of throwing it away, I would reupholster it. So now after partially removing some of the horrible 80s swirly white fabric I am finding some oddities about it. I've reupholstered a few things before, nothing overly old and nothing overly nice, and have never seen a chair made like this. It's stuffed with something I can only describe as hay and the backing to the chair is se sort of woven pattern. Can anyone tell me what era this could be from? I curious and would like to know details if anyone has any.
