Hi,
A superb piece of Hungarian art pottery, from the 1960s. Janos Török, (Mezötúr, 11. Juli 1932 - Pécs, 13. September 1996) was employed as a designer at Zsolnay from the late 1950s, but also had a small studio at home.
This is a fine abstract, 1960s, "mother and child" figurine. It is interesting that Török's use of Zsolnay's black eosin glaze suggests that this prototype was originally destined to become a Zsolnay production.
This piece is hand-signed, unlike most of the production pieces for Zsolnay.
I have not found any trace that this item went into production.

Thanks Vetraio50. My Hungarian ex-father-in-law had to do a runner in 1956, from Pécs, during the Hungarian Uprising. He would have loved this piece. M
I'd like to see it after a clean ... the contours would be even better. I'm thinking it might be a bit more risqué than Mother 'n child though .... lol
Janos Török's work for Zsolnay is superb.

yes vetraio50, I can see where you are coming from, with that idea. I think this pre-dates that piece by at least 10 years? Possibly 20 years, But woman and faun was mass- produced, and prices reflect that as well. I like those less, because they are ornamented/decorated, this prototype stands on its own merits......

Not much of an art person, but do recognize a quality piece when it's set in front of me... I agree with VETRAIO as to possibility of risqué styling, I see something other than mother and child in my interpretation of the design, more like a cuddling embrace of passion. Just my view point. But "Art" is viewed by interpretation of others, seldom people agree upon the exact meaning.
