In 1985 when I came to New from Ireland I became involved with a stained glass studio. One day while out shopping some pewter pieces caught my eye depicting characters from The Lord of The Rings, made by Gallo Pewter on Long Island. Each piece was signed and dated. I began collecting the pieces while at the same time created a game board in stained glass. I chose black and white glass representing light and dark (good and evil). 15 years later living in North Carolina I had become an accomplished artist /woodcarver. On a trip home to Ireland that summer my brother produced a beautiful set of Victorian table legs that he salvaged. I saw immediately the potential for a finished table so with legs in hand I returned to North Carolina and began removing many layers of paint. Finally I was able to restore the legs to its former glory, a dark rich oak wood. I designed a table top incorporating the glass work and matching the wood carvings with those on the legs. I then added two carved crests representing the opposing forces. The table top was placed into a small tent with ammonia which accelerates the wood naturally bringing it close to the color of the table legs. Finally all was sealed and polished bringing to conclusion two centuries of wood work, a 15 year creation a of a very unique and one of a kind chess table.
The pieces can be seen on my website; paulnixonart.com. Just scroll under my whimsical page.
