Celluloid Charms

I have several I believe to be celluloid charms. These have silk (?) ties on them. I understand that these may have been used in old gum ball machines and some for charms in bread. I can't find anyone that really knows where these came from. I have several types of animals (scotty dogs, greyhounds, pelicans, monkeys, etc.) and monkey see,hear, speak. Can anyone tells me about these. I am interested in the "bread" theory. Thanks in advance!
