Publisher defect - Black's Law Dictionary

Thought this was interesting and wanted to share... I found this first edition Black's Law Dictionary (published 1891) at an estate sale and was surprised to find a publisher defect when I got it home. I'm not sure if this defect was somewhat common for this publication or not. But there's even a letter from the publisher acknowledging the defect and apologizing to the original purchaser for letting this book get out of the factory in its condition, so I'm assuming it's rare. The defect was with the thumb-notches (I think that's what they're called)... the little indentations where you would normally find a letter of the alphabet for easier reference in a dictionary. But this book doesn't have the letters printed in the notches. So the publisher sent the original purchaser some black labels so that he could attach them to the appropriate pages. It looks as though he started to do so, but gave up on the idea. The envelope has the remaining labels. Pretty interesting find that makes this landmark book even more special!
