Old security roll clasp, dating it around 1930.

    1.3/8" or 3.5cm wide

Hope it will please you :-)

i - Just seeing this . The cameo itself is probably German, Idar-Oberstein region. The stone will have been treated to get the green layer; agate is porous & easily dyed, even the Romans knew how to do it. This green does not occur in natural agate. A readable short account of the Idar-Oberstein gem cutting history is here:

      http://farlang.com/idar-oberstein

The setting is very interesting, have never seen anything similar. Could also be German? They had goldsmiths too, but everyone seems to assume everything has to be English or French. Trying to research the Nero cameo I have on that board, could not find any scholarly literature on German cameos or cameo cutters, even though the literature on medalists & gem engravers lists many. Problem may be that Google thinks I don't want any results in German.

Hi Cameosleuth! As always your comment is so interesting and documented! Thanks a lot for the link :-)

I knew green agate is dyed, this is the first old cameo carved from it I see.
The green backgroud of the profile is mate, rather unusual for me (but I'm far to be a cameo specialist!)

Same for the guilloché enamel mount, you may be right thinking it could be german!

I have not studied this in any very scientific way, but the vintage/antique cameos with a green background I see where the age is known seem to date to around the turn of the (20th) century. It's a really lovely piece. :)

Thanks again, Cameosleuth! I thought if was around 1930 from the clasp, but turn of 20th fits me too :-))
