Hi Pipistrelle! It is from a WW1 trench watch, the cover is a shrapnel guard.

thanks kyratango for the information i will pass that on to my husband
kyratango has hit the nail on the head...The grating is a crystal protector from the early 19-teens, the other is the watch casing itself. both pieces are excellent examples of pre-war and war time early wristwatches. I'm particular interested in what the engraving on bottom side of the casing is. the lighting has restricted my ability to see clearly...might be that I'm older and half blind now, but.... The "Crowned Shield with Wings" with whatever is written has my curiosity flowing.... could you/would you add another photo, clearly showing depiction and lettering. It will surely have a significate meaning and history as to what it is. Thank you
Kerry
I will do as soon as I get home from shopping kerry10456
Thank You, will be "WATCHING" for it. OOPS sorry for the pun :-)
RFC = Royal Flying Corps - predecessor to the RAF.
kerry10456 have given the watch holder a clean and put up some better pictures, the writing is as follows from top to bottom
LIEUT J WITT-MANN
Per Ardua Ad Astra (through adversity to the stars)
hope that helps
Thank you Big-Zingo,
