I love this silver bookmark shaped like an owl! It is quite a luxury to have a bookmark made of silver, right? I am not sure when it was made, but I assume dates to the 1920’s. On the first picture you can see the details of the owl – its feathers, feet and green eyes (probably made of glass) and on the last the owl is guarding a page in an old book (an 1814 songbook). The owl now resides on a shelf with a small collection of 18th-19th century books. I have seen several of these owl bookmarks made by various silversmiths, so they might have been a ‘standard product’ on a par with other silver objects. I found it in nearby second-hand store which sells all kind of things such as kitchenware, old LP's, glass and ceramics - and occasionally some silver, too!
Size: 9 cm. Mark 830 S and ‘CN’ for N.C. Nielsen, a silversmith active in Aarhus (the second-largest city in Denmark) 1893-1937.
A Real Beauty of a Bookmark !!!!
