    (915 items)

Finding, purchasing, hauling from NC, assembling and restoring and finally Mounting the P-51 Mustang was all a thrilling experience and one that won't soon be forgotten. Each of the many processes was a thrill all by itself and finally having it on the Pole at aaaLakeside Storage is the real capstone of our Collection. We love this airplane!

      Dave,
Thx for the love it. Getting this plane was beyond our greatest dream! We still can't believe we got it.
    3. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Kerry10456,
Thx for the Love it! Can't believe more people haven't?
    4. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
You did remove the wings for that trip, didn't you?
    5. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
Well, we'll take it back to the top, where it will be seen again....I'll double love it, if the others don't, they missed out on a cool plane...only thing that would made it better.... if it was F-4 U...lol
    6. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
Ah, Kerry. Spoken like another true F-4U lover!
    7. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
      Lucas, I agree the 51 is great bird...but I was a float type guy.....if you can't drop it on a boat....just not quite right...lol
    8. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
Guess I should clarify the above statement..... Marine Corps, both land and sea....besides My bird was a later predecessor.... The F-4 J's and S.....now there's a rock.....anything under 210 knots...glide pattern 75 to 1... for every foot forward, 75 feet down...lol
    9. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
And also the music those big radials produce. In-lines just don't quite get there!
    10. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
You betcha..... I posted a quickie for you...should be top of page
    11. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
Kerry, I was referring to the F-4U Corsair! "Radial" should have been a hint.
    12. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
Yes, knew exactly what you meant, me too, the "U" was which bird was talking about...just added the new fangled birds for Sh*ts and Grins
    13. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
and twin J-79's doesn't qualify as a "Radial" either, lol But back to The Corsairs...still my favorite of the "Prop" aircraft
    14. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
I, of all people, should have known there's not a straight man left. lol
    15. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
      Huh? what's you talking about.....lol
    16. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
Yes we took wings off, tail off, stripped it back to the firewall and it was still so long we couldn't make left turns, Fun trip across the Nation.
    17. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
You're nuts! But then again so are we.
    18. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Kerry10456,
We would love to find a Corsair in someone's back yard! Still looking. We can't even find a 6' red Flying A so may not get a Corsair for a while.

      Kerry10456,
Thx for the Double love it

Can totally relate, we all have that "1" thing we're on the hunt for....my "Holy Grail", I've seen a few for sale, but just seem to make the deal......But my Granny always said, good things come to them that wait.... She forgot to add how long the wait would be...
    21. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
Rattle, I remember your poste about the trip a bit. You needed me. I've taken a lot of wings off & reinstalled them.
    22. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Kerry10456,
Wait? I'm old and old people don't wait well. I'm always in a hurry as time is short.
I need to turbocharge what's left of life.
    23. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
Yes we needed you. Every time we buy something heavy or hard to load we need you!

Several years ago I went to my first fighter meet, WWII war birds and I had been travelling some hours when I began to wonder where the airfield was. So I'm driving down the Motorway M11 and in my rear view mirror I saw a plane...closer and closer it came and lifted itself over the car and turned right into North Weald airfield! What a welcome and the aircraft well that was a P-51 silver like yours!
    26. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
I think the P-51 is known as the finest piston aircraft ever made by the U.S. Military. It was faster, flew higher, carried more arms and flew farther than any other fighter, according to the data I read. It won the war in Europe and then went to the Orient. I love the Corsairs etc, but they were no match to the P-51 once it got the RR engine.
    27. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      GeodeJem,
Thx for the Love it and comment. Just listening to that power plant on a P-51 is a real thrill & to have one swoop down on you is incredible! Only about 150 left in service these days so they are rare to see in the wild, except at an air show. Amazing flying machines and everybody's favorite to fly as they soon become an extension of the pilot. Every pilot loves that part & especially in combat! Well, at least in the old days of dogfighting visually.

Rattle, turbocharging is nice, but I'd rather be blown. Turbos work on exhaust & the heat burns up the bearing. Blowers don't, but take power from the drive side of the eng.. We use a hard to find (here) high temp. lubricant for turbos. called "mouse milk". If you find a source, please let me know.
I've seen many P-51's, but was really impressed when one stopped @ out airport. When the guy left, he opened it up & did a quick 90% up at the centre crossing of the runways & climbed straight up to at least 1000 ft. before snapping another 90% to level flight. (four blade prop.). Well, I was impressed!!
    32. Signaholic Signaholic, 9 years ago
That is quite the statement piece!
    33. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
It's hard not to be impressed by a piece of machinery like the P-51 and don't forget it's age! I believe all P-51 pilots left the war deaf from the screaming exhausts just a couple of feet in front of them, but they loved being able to call upon those 1680 horses when they were chasing a Messerschmitt or running from one! The P-51s were so successful that by wars end the Germans still had planes and even jets, but all the good pilots were gone thx to the awesome P-51. The history of the P-51 is interesting as it was just a fair plane until the Brits designed that RR supercharged engine for it. Prior to that they had an underpowered Allison that was not so great. U already knew all of that I'm sure.
    34. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Signaholic,
U stated it perfectly! What better sign could we get than the P-51 on a pole? We just need to find a Flying A 6' sign to go with it! Know of any we might buy? We have a nice Property line pole & ring to put it in but no sign. Thx for the Love it.

      Kerry10456
Thx for showing me the sign. Waaaay too expensive & not even a very nice sign. Retail on a 9 is about $4k to $4300. This sign is a 7 -7 1/2 I think and is worth about $1500. Just my opinion, but we have bought a few signs over the past 2 yrs and I have a pretty good idea what things are really worth. Think I'll wait, but thx
    37. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
I thought so also, but just had to share the link....best offers they say, but usually people don't care for my honest opinion when I offer lol
    38. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
I should add, I'm fairly aware of prices of certain items, and know when the treasure seekers think they have the Crème de Crop and when you approach them with a truly honest appraisal and offer, they seem to get "Bulled" up.
I did mention before the link...it was touch, lol, out there, I knew was not an option, but wanted to let you know, some of us are looking...just in case :-)
    39. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
BTW, we have determined I'm a Corsair fan, but in real life, here's the birds I dealt with....later model A/C, but by today's standards, an antique airframe....

      Kerry10456,
Maybe I'll make him a legit offer for what it's actually worth and watch while he first gets angry, then gasps for air, then fires back at me, then dismisses me in disgust. What da ya think?
    41. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
LOL , that's what I normally do....then in about a week or so, they call/email you back asking if offer still stands...lol
    42. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Kerry10456,
I really appreciate having others help us look for the last signs to "complete" our collection. Obviously it will never really be complete, but for the major stuff we are looking for it can be with the simple addition of the big red Flying A.
    43. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Kerry10456,
Yes I am fully aware that you are a Corsair fan. I fully respect that and a guys taste can not be questioned. It's another Blonds, Brunettes, Redheads choice and there's no right or wrong to taste. I could try and persuade you to my view, but in reality if we had found a Corsair then that would have been our favorite as well.
Thx for all the input & suggestions and I hope u find us a Flying A somewhere.
    44. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Kerry10456
U may be right, but when I offer 1/3 of what they want, it's usually considered an insult. Hopefully he get past that and wake up to reality? We shall see.
    45. kerry10456 kerry10456, 9 years ago
Know that....I've been on the search for a 1934 Betty Boop pocket watch for several years, either the seller thinks it's the only one left and priced out of sight or condition is beyond what I can even consider fixable and they still want your first born.....so understand completely...the dang watch sold for buck fifty new and a junker seems to draw 2k +, just can't pull the trigger on one....yet
    46. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Kerry10456,
Exactly! I go by my gut feeling on what is a "wise investment". It's hard to know the future, just like the Stock Market, but overvalued is a reality these days and these signs do have a limited number of potential buyers that can afford the big prices. I'm not one of those, nor am I a speculator. Just a Bottom Fish Collector looking for a fair deal on the signs we want for our Free Museum. People ought to donate them! A few people are beginning to, and that's nice. Everybody wins and they can see their signs any time they want, as well as thousands of others in the meantime.

Jacky is back, so you might not hear from me for awhile!
    48. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
Who's Jacky and what does that have to do with old men's babblings? Is she the Nazi Nurse at the care center for the aged where u reside?
    49. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Trey,
      Thanks for the Love it.
    50. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Keyy10456,
I'm pretty sure the Flying A on EBay is the very sign being sold by the guy in Vt that I won for $1500 & he decided he wanted more $$ so reversed the deal thru Pay Pal and relisted it with EBay. I think this guy is the new buyer and is trying to make his profit off of me again? I could swear it's the same sign! I offered $1500 and the auto reject machine auto refused the offer. Since he paid at least $1600 plus shipping he will want a lot for it. Oh well! I'll just keep looking.
    51. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
Something like that Rattle. Kraut for sure.
    52. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
Perhaps it won't fly well if u rwant mind the Kraut that they lost the war and that the P-51 helped make that happen faster. Just a suggestion.
    53. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
This 1 is enough trouble without stirring up sh--. You trying to get me killed?
    54. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Kerry10456,
Called the Flying A seller on EBay & he did buy the sign from Mark Chute in Vt where I had bought it off EBay bid at $1500 last yr & Mark reversed my purchase thru Pay Pal with EBay permission and relisted and resold the sign for more $$ just like he told me he was going to do!!! The prob is EBay is not honorable so some sellers/Buyers become their worst selves for $$$ & eBay allows it even tho their agreements say they won't. Sad!!!
    55. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
Sorry. I was just being my sarcastic self at your expense. I'm guessing she's georgeous and sweet and fixes great meals & is loving and kind. Have a fun day at the beach with her and your pick nick lunch.
    56. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
Rattle, this is the one who put me in the cardiac unit 5 yrs & 5 days ago. This 1 you don't want to irritate in any manner. LOL!
    57. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
Not going to ask how! Just hope it was/is worth it. Been to that unit myself & hope to avoid it for a while longer.
    58. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
Rattle, at the time, - it was worth it! When I came out of surgery, I had mixed opinions. LOL!!
    59. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
Prior to the surgery there was some question if u had a heart. I guess that is now confirmed as a yes? As to its function, I hear that the jury is still out? What does the SS say?
    60. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 9 years ago
Rattle, I just tried to send you some pix of said cardiac bate, but aaalakesidestorage.com is not recognized with chrome. By"SS", do you mean Deutsche SS? I don't want to die with my boots on! Now, in the saddle I can accept! LOL!!
    61. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
      Blunderbuss,
Try me at: kauairooster@gmail.com and see how that flys. Do not send any Deutch SS along with it. Haven't got my 50 cal with me.
    62. Rattletrap Rattletrap, 9 years ago
What happened to Blunderbuss u ask? A 35 yr old German happened! What more can be said?

Saw an awesome WWII Navy troop carrier on a recent trip to Texas. I'd love one in a pole like that! I'd love any smaller Military aircraft I could find. Know of any for sale?
