This latest fine was located in the South Bronx. It is a very large realist painting, signed and dated 69.
The painting is vibrantly colored in reds, yellow and orange in it's back ground.
The authors name "Pope" in no really clear.
I am seeking information as to who is the artist, his achievements, etc.
If anyone have any information pertaining to this artist and or artwork, please make contact.
I welcome any and all information pertaining to the image.
Upon further research, I discovered an artist named Gustava Celestine Johnson Pope.
He is a Black American artist, born 1911, know for painting and art education.
He was sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute and known to the Harlem Harmon Foundation.
He is known to have lived in Massachusetts and North Carolina.
A special thanks to all.
Built for comfort, not speed.
Do you think this is by a known artist? There is a Directory of Artists. Obesity was not thought of as a necessarily negative thing back when.May I direct your attention to ‘old paintings’ as proof Famed artist Paul Ruben's paintings supposedly depicting beauty, (1500s) often appear to be paintings of very fleshy women. By today's standards these women do not represent beautiful nude bodies because we know they are not healthy . They are startlingly and dangerously obese.
In 1960s, I think this may be a private image of someone the artist loved. Or a personal preference of body type.
BUT, I could certainly be way off in my ideas I wish you good luck in your search for the artist, and maybe you'll find out this is valuable.
Well, PCC, I figure this is poste McDonalds! Just joking! I like to see what I'm doing!! LOL!!!
And to validate her appetite even a bowl of something to eat at her elbow. Seems the artist could have been making a "statement".
