----------------------------Union Bank of Canada----------------------------------
Beginning under a provincial charter as the Union Bank of Lower Canada in 1865, the Union Bank remained in Quebec City until 1912 when it relocated its head office to Winnipeg. In 1886, the bank's name was changed to "Union Bank of Canada."
The Union Bank of Canada's legacy was its distinction as the first bank to provide an extensive branch system throughout the Prairie Provinces, and the first chartered bank to operate in Alberta. Frequently referred to as the "pioneer bank of Western Canada", the Union Bank followed Canada's railway across the Prairies, often first to open at the "end of the steel", housed in a tent or rough shack.
With the deepening of the post-war depression in 1922, the Union Bank's strategy of exuberant expansion was cracking due to overexposure on the Prairies. Although the bank's problems were not insurmountable its directors felt recovery would be long and slow and pursued a merger with another bank. On September 1, 1925, the Union Bank was absorbed by Royal Bank and the Union's considerable branch network, of which approximately two-thirds were located on the Prairies, rounded out Royal Bank's western presence.

In 1912 the Northern Crown Bank opened a branch at Holdfast, Saskatchewan in temporary quarters in the local hotel. When the safe arrived, it was found to be too large to place inside the hotel so it was left outside in the street. Despite the fact that the safe was unguarded and that the town was populated by strangers and without street lights, no attempt was made to open the safe without using the combination.
Structure of Wood! What about fire?? I think if this was the only option, I'd keep my money inn my mattress....Very nice photo.

There was a town in gold rush town in NE AL in the early 1800's. As teenagers, friends & I located the town & what was obviously the bank location. Inside the foundations was a stone & concrete "vault" about 10' x 10' standing alone. We panned around there & sold what we found to a banque about 15 miles away that had scales & paid us for our "dust". $35 an oz.!!!
See no proof of a steel vault & probably a wooden structure (apparently like we found) with a brick/stone vault. Lot cheaper that way! We can only speculate at this stage.
BB2, i love that story,,, COOL.....
There so many treasure hidden everywhere, we don't gone believe how many out there, for sure.
Alan
Those characters look more like they are there to rob the banque than guard it!! LOL!!
Was the pix of the vault there when 1st posted? Ain't going thru that door! Maybe it was just kept outside! LOL!!
Many thanks, Trey
