The object is 11.5 cm high and came with a small stand (Picture 1). The object is hollow and has openings at both ends. Someone suggested it is intended to be the bowl of a pipe.
This object has been in my family for 3-4 generations at least.
Can anyone assist in identifying this object?
Many thanks for any and all suggestions!
Very nice! Can it be part of a lamp? Is it marble? The reason I ask is because I have a marble lamp in my basement that has been taken apart and it is similar to your photograph. - Or maybe a candle holder?? Just guessing....
Looks like soapstone vase to me Chinese by my guess and I think the stand goes the other way maybe could be a incense burner since is has a open bottom. I don't think is a pipe bowl do to the shape. If the dragon was going up the neck to the base then I would say that it could be a pipe bowl.
Hi,
Thanks for your comments and suggestions.
The object is only 11.5 cm high so I do not think it could be a lamp...unless it is some sort of oil lamp I have not seen before.
The stand DOES go the other way! Perfect fit and much more elegant. Obvious now that you pointed it out. I put it the other way because that was how it was mounted in my grandparents cabinet for decades. The idea of an incense burner is intriguing and I will test it to see whether there is enough air coming into it to support combustion...or are you suggesting that it would simply be a base for stick incense ?
I was just taking a guess with the open bottom it looked like that the top had soot stains but hard to tell from the pictures . Could be just that it never had a bottom or bottom was broke out at some point in it life and was mounted to the base? Still a nice piece.
