    Rattletrap
    (910 items)

My son recently saw an antique dealer that had these two huge hand carved Americn Indians in his private collection that were carved by the same wood carver that carved another statue we bought from him several months ago. These now proudly stand outside the downstairs back door of the house and will scare me to death if I come in the dark!

These aren't from the late 1800's or early 1900's? I did some research about 30 yrs. ago & pre-computer (or for me) & the Asians were already making wooden reproductions & trying to pass them off as orig.. Their give -away was, they just couldn't keep the Asian features away from the eyes & face. Easy to spot after knowing that.

      Blunderbuss,
The problem with these is not the eyes, it is the hands and thumbs. Pretty weird hands! I don't really care who actually carved them or where. I just care that they are very nicely done with lots of details and on a single huge tree. The double trailer headdresses really catch my eye and it love them as I have a huge beautiful bronze casting of an Indian Chief with a double trailer headdress and it's a real keeper in my collection. Got it from and antique store in Salt Lake many years ago. Also have a real double trailer headdress hanging from there wall in the living room that I got at a mtn man rendevouz

      Blunderbuss,
Another thought; DNA studies of the Indians in the Western USA shows that they have strong ties to the Orient and likely originated from there and migrated across the Bering Strates. Recent studies from Harvard and Columbia Universities has shown that about 25% of the Eastern Indians studied have Haplo X DNA which originates in the Middle East. Inter mixture of tribes may account for the Oriental eyes in some tribes. We have lots of Indians in Utah and the Oriental eyes are very common whereas it is less common in The Eastern Native Americans
