    Hi there,

This item was found in Reeth Museum in the Yorkshire Dales, and I'm struggling to identify it.

Reeth is well known as a lead mining, and textile hub.

Any assistance you guys can be, in identifying it will be very much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

A detachable handle? It looks to me as though one would push the button end into a round opening in a container or vessel until the beads on each arm passed through the rim of the opening. Then, when the handle is no longer being pushed in, the rod and spring would force the arms to spread again, causing the beads to catch under the rim.

I notice on one bead there is a sort of lip on the handle side, sort of like the bead was purposefully offset to obtain that profile to hold a inwardly rounded rim.

The handle is not detachable, it's a single unit. I like your idea, but I don't know what kind of lid it could be used for

      Light bulb just came on.

Maybe it's for lifting and carrying large spools of yarn/thread that afix to a machine? I'd be fixed on smelting/casting/foundry, but textile producers would also be humping around things that don't normally have a handle of their own.

A large roll of fabric could have a metal rim for a hub, same holds true for big spools.

It's possible, but I'm not sure how it would work :/
