This is a Burley & Co 12" oval "pure nickel-rolled on steel" hotel pan with cover. Markings indicate they were a Chicago company and this pan was made in Germany. There is no date, but there is a serial number: 6603.
Burley and Company was founded in 1884 from the former Burley and Tyrell, who had advertised themselves as the largest importers of china and glassware. I found no information about when they went out of business, but the latest reference I found to them in a quick search was 1915-1917.
I am fairly certain that this pan came from my maternal grandfather, Thomas Richard Day Sr., who was a hotel chef in Minneapolis in the 1910's and 1920's. How he got it out of the kitchen and home remains a mystery! We use it still to roast things, like pork tenderloin, and it is also a nice-looking serving platter.
There are several articles celebrating the commercial sucsess of rolling pure nickel on steel in 1920. Giving time for product development, that still fits into your timeline.
