Porcelain sculpture of a young male on a goat by Ferdinand Liebermann (1883-1941), for Rosenthal - model # 68, decoration #1160 and entitled “Capriccio” - designed in 1910 and this example executed that same year, about 12 inches tall, signed & marked.
Unique and cool piece . I wonder what it represents .
Thanks Marty, I know that Liebermann designed a number of similar pieces for Rosenthal, e.g. child riding a turtle, girl riding a bird, woman riding an ostrich, child with a penguin, "faun" with a crocodile, man reading to a bird.
Liebermann was a sculptor who worked in various media, e.g. he made a bronze of Adolf Hitler's niece that Hitler had reproduced for various of his residences.
stunning!!!!!
Exquisite this little faunos
Thanks Sean, kivatinitz
your very welcome VioletOrange!!
I have seen this before, and always hated it because I do not own it. You have some very beautiful pieces I envy ! I never realized the base is so large.
I hate you too Phil - LOL
So little of this kind of stuff came around in this area. Must have been wonderful to see the shop windows in old Germany or France.
I had a lieberman once, cannot remember too well, they said it was rare but that was in the nineties - it had a bear and maybe a drum ?
Perfect name! 'Capriccio' means a painting or other work of art representing a fantasy or a mixture of real and imaginary features!
capriccio actually means more like something beautiful and somewhat unpredictable - which doesn't follow the rules, as are commonly understood. it is also used to describe paintings of views which don't really exist.
Appreciate your comments, Celiene
wonder if he was a mason ..?.. nice find..
