    Henri II Style Furniture 1848-1880
Second Empire refers to the period in which Louis Napoleon, Bonaparte’s nephew declared himself emperor as Napoleon III. An eclectic mix of styles were inspired by the past 500 years. Often several styles were used for one piece. The Revival period saw more from past styles including Gothic, Renaissance,Regency, Louis XIV,Louis XV & Louis XVI
If interested see in seeing very similar and near identical items as my chair--KyraTango (French) sends us to Google to type in
" Henri 11 Chairs"--- and there you see it !! Congrats Kyra!!!!!

Luckily there are no tears, the leather well worn but totally intact, all together, feels sturdy with very slight wiggle tho.
Unusual brass studs all around,. Comfortable. Nice size --40 inches high. Weighty.

Not masonic in my mind, but a beauty!

Blunderbuss2--Thanks for helping out. I have been sitting in it for a few hours. I think it is hundreds of years old! I am beyond thrilled with it.

Looks like initials "A" & "D" to me. If you luv it, that's all that counts. Of course, you can send it to me (prepaid) for further research! LOL!

Not a masonic Symbol at all, but rather looks like the initial M and D tooled into the leather. The styling looks like eastlake, but not the normal eastlake because of the inclusion of other styles. English Renaissance is in mind but then again too many styles in one chair.

Actually blade, I believe that is the old style "A" which had the cross-bar that looked like a "v". Hey, we all have our opinions. LOL!

--"Gothic side chair 1800, Walnut wood. From England." related to me in a private appraisal where I sent a photo. No pricing allowed here so I can't tell..
BUT I am still calling this an UNSOLVED MYSTERY"!!
The letters you see--I see too. It is hard because some are unusual and hard to be sure of. I'll tell ya, the people were short and sat very straight! I am 5 foot two, and it is fine for me, the seat must have been for one of those puffy skirts, so it is very wide for my bottom. No slumping allowed I guess. Very straight back, but still comfortable as I said above.. Thanks for the love all!!! Nice!!!

You're dodging. An "A" or an "M"! LOL!

Just occurred to me our neighbor's hand is pointing to something not in the chair legs!! See photo 4--there is nothing to point to, maybe just brushing off a fallen leaf--

I should leave the leather alone then--it is in good shape for as old as it is..( 200 years)
Or would it be wise to use a leather conditioner or something to protect it. I feel unsure of what I should do.

      Pretty seat, PCC !
Google images for Henri II chairs, this imaginary style was in high fashion in France around 1880.
They were part of dining room set, with highly ornate dressers and table.

The initials on your's seem to be A D

      :-)

Hi Kyra!! You know,-- I think you are RIGHT! Mine is a bit more ornate. But easily the same style!! I will go and do the history lesson for them. When I sit...I will think of you and have a glass of wine. Cheers!

I have a bid on an early CDV (France) with a girl standing by a close reminder of my chair--I hope I win, I want to enlarge as much as possible and frame in an old frame above the chair. Here is where I go berzzerk, overbidding and eat spam for 2 weeks! I NEED the photo...Please God!!

Hey Guys--The chair seat is in good condition and chair itself sturdy. Can I allow anyone of a smallish type build to occasionally sit on it?? There is a slight depression in the leather where as many bottoms have sat. Actually, I have never sat on it, and I really thrill with the thought of doing so. In weigh 125 Thanks.

Also, addenda to yesterday's post...Should I polish the wood. With what?
    17. kyratango kyratango, 9 years ago
Hi PCC! Long time no see !
Why not seat on it! Does it "wiggle/shiggle"?
They were very solid, and knew generations of butts
      :-D
A bee wax polish will be perfect, the leather may benefits some nourrisher if dried...

Thanks--will d0 ---- no wiggles!! I had 2 heart attacks and an aorata heart valve replacement...6 weeks in hospital, still recovering. Glad to be back!!! I missed my friends here!!

Been there, done that, PCC. Good to see you back. Take it easy, but not too easy, as you have to stay active.

Chair seat leather loods blue in some photos--Just the lighting--see Photo #1 for accurate color.
