To pretty to use that way
presentation piece maybe i don't think that such an ornate piece would be used in such a manner.

thanks for comments but I can confirm that even although it is just a kitchen tool many of them were ornamented like this one and used regularly. I was told that the slight curve on the handle is because it was used to hack at large lumps of sugar and the force gradually distorted it. I understand that sugar used to be bought in large pieces and had to be broken up. This was long before they had it granulated.
