Another 50 cent flea market find this past weekend. I have not the slightest idea what the design is supposed to represent. I have seen much jewelry coming out of what was Siam over the years, but nothing with this design. The only mark on it is the "800"number stamped on the back.

According to what I've read, this is known as a sans head eagle crest, typically used in heraldry? I did see a German crest sans head eagle but looked nothing like yours. Could be based on that.

katherine - that could be. I looked at photos of Siam cuff links and didn't find anything even remotely like these. The woman I bought them from didn't know what they were to begin with... :-)

Perhaps it's a artistic representation of Garuda. http://www.universaltreasures.com/images/Jpegs/Garuda1_copy(1).jpg

Look here under Waterhouse, the description is of an eagle sans head and neck, wing expanded, that's an example in heraldry:

I just think that Siam cared little about English or German heraldry, so it has no bearing on this piece. Garuda, however is a very popular symbol in Thailand (Siam) even to this day. Over the years, stylistically his image in nielloware jewelry has evolved, for example: https://img0.etsystatic.com/040/0/9476606/il_570xN.625513790_h9g0.jpg

TubeAmp - interesting. Garuda is very different from the design on these cufflinks but might be something to consider.

Thanks for the Love, everyone :)

Thanks for that link, Katherine. I'll look further and see if anything turns up.

Zowie - it's a nice spot. I'm 15 minutes from Belgium, 15 minutes from Germany and two hours from France. Considering what's going on in France now, I'm not likely to go there anytime soon!

@Katherinescollections, take all my posts as "in my humble opinion", I just tend to apply the law of parsimony into solving these mysteries. No ill intentions intended, I promise. My apologies if you were offended.

I think it helps if you rotate the first image:

The thing is there is alke.so a lot happening here that I don't like either. It doesn't matter were you go anymore there is always something we wont like

Zowie, yes that is very true. Humans always find something to bitch and moan about, no matter where they live!

      Thanks to all for looking!
