    We bought it at an antique shop on the east coast. It's brass seems to have been made to lie not be hung. It's very heavy. The store didn't know what it is and we've been trying to find out for years. We love it but would just love to find out exactly what it is!

      Looks like it was intended to represent a sarcophagus. Possibly a tourist item.

      You need to research the term so you understand it a bit better. A sarcophagus is just another word for a coffin. Religion or country doesn't matter. The term applies to all countries and they may well be Catholic because they were used in Rome and I believe they still use the term as it applies to a pope being buried. In fact I am sure it is used as it applies to Popes.
