who knows what these Japanese dolls are fot?

Hi,

just bought these hand dolls (?) at a local estate and the lady couldn't tell me anything about them, except that they had been brought over from Japan by her family in the 1920's.

Does anyone know the maker or recognize what they were used for?
Are they theater puppets, or................
