    Found this nice example recently. These were used to toast bread or other foods. They also came in different forms without feet and with four feet so that you could flip it. Shepherd's cane finial and a riveted end, these were common in the 18th and early 19th centuries. All iron.

      thanks hotairfan....early iron is def. my favorite, but tricky stuff to deal with. Sometimes the fakes are so good that is nearly impossible to tell. I get paranoid about that stuff.

      does anyone have any hints for weeding out fake early american forged iron. I can't really find any info on the web.
