Just got Finished restoring this Rare 1938 Packard-Bell Hi-Fi Tube Radio Model 50 have been on the hunt for one of these for about 5 years now this is a huge set at about 40 lbs.
After reading a article in the Antique Radio Classified by John Ekland on the Remler 88 also a early Hi-Fi set from 1935, in the article John stated that the 10 tube Packard-Bell Model 50 was the most powerful table radio ever made.
Found this one on eBay it was listed under( Antique Packard Bell Wood Case Radio Not Working, need to Repair or Part ) they did not know the rarity of the set with no paper label, but I can tell by the pictures it had 10 tubes, and the 50 stamped into the Chassis.
Earlier this year I meet Ray at a local Berkeley Garage sale, Ray is a Amazing Radio technician with over 55 years of experience, I asked him if he would take on the Packard Bell Model 50, he very thoroughly restored the Chassis, he Repaired/ Replaced the power supply circuitry and components, filter capacitors, power transformer, replaced the line cord replaced all paper Capacitors, Tested all tubes replaced 4 weak tubes, Alignment of I.F. stage and R.F. stages ( 3 Bands ) Lubricated all controls, and cleaned the Chassis.
This Radio sounds Amazing !!! Thanks Ray !!!
I Restored the Cabinet to the Original look, I removed the old finish with Lacquer Thinner, and used a Extra Dark Walnut Mohawk Wood Toner for the speaker slits area and around the top and bottom.
One more Beauty to add to my collection.
Looks great!
