Came across this. It always bothers me when I can't figure out exactly what something is. I am not versed in these type photos but I am stuck on 2 issues. I think it's an Ambrotype based on the research I have done. I would appreciate if anyone could weigh in on this. Secondly, the engraving on the case. I am guessing it was a member of the Navy? Any help is appreciated.

No need for answer to engraving. I found it on the Library of Congress Website.

It is a thermoplastic case. These were used to house all forms of "hard images"-- daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes.

Your image is NOT a dag. If the image itself is on glass (NOT the cover glass) then it is an ambrotype. Picture #4 looks like the back of a tintype-- based on that and the appearance of the image, I would bet it is a tintype.

Condition makes a big difference on desirability and values-- yours has a lot of edge chipping and what appears to be a big chunk missing on the top edge (left side).

      Two other things:

Your guy is a civilian-- nothing military about his clothing.

Also, you may want to bump image #2 or #3 to the top as they will attract more interest than the one currently posted #1.

The only reason I got military is because the case is a naval case.
