i picked this up at Goodwill today. it was a little box, but the cover had these 'legs' on it, and when i put it together like in the first and third photos, it fit perfectly. it has a deco / bauhaus look to it. it stands about four inches tall by two inches wide. any ideas?

Exactly what I thought! Interesting how they repurposed/repeated the "foot" shape to make the lid. Lid seems inconsistent with the remainer of the form. a cache pot maybe? My best guess would be 1930s California, but it could also be a hobbiest the mold. Is it a satin matte glaze? Never seen anything like it before.
