Hi this chap has been in the family long time. If only he could talk? I can imagine the stories. I know he's a merrythought hygienic toys bear and was one of the first of their production. He has his label on his foot, dating him 1930's. His creator had the ideas for his design around 1917. He's in good condition but bless him, he could do with a bath. Love him, he's got lovely character to his face. Would love to know little more about him, like I'm unsure if he was one of those made with a button in his ear? How many of them are out there? There isn't a lot of information out there, or I'm looking in the wrong places. I'm scared to give him a bath, I don't mind his little urchin look. With thanks, Donna, Buckinghamshire, England.

      Beautiful Merrythought Bear !
Merrythought has handmade traditional teddy bears in the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, Shropshire, UK since 1930 and still operate selling in limited editions . Made of mohair so do not wash you can use damp cloth on a spot . I would be very careful and would take him outside and gently gently brush is hair only . No steiff used button in ear but yours is not a steiff , He is wonderful and looks well loved .

He has been well loved even before he was handed down, he's all that I've got left really from my mums side of the family. Have thought for years to bath or not to bath, I'm glad I hadn't. Thankyou for your comment, have lovely evening.

This website explains the earliest bears for couple years were made with button.
