Hi!
This is a M38 german paratrooper helmet, my father bought it from a friend, not to collect, but to help his friend...Who bought it in London... So we do not have much information about this item...
It has "verdun" scratched, and the symbols are quite visible.
We know that its pictured at this book: " German Camouflaged Helmets Of The Second World War" Vol II, by Branislav Radovic pg. 542/543...
But we can't even find informations about the author anywhere online.
I hope someone knows something about this piece, or where I can find more information regarding it...since it have been a big mystery to us.
Violating our rules, this would probably bring over $1K on auction. Very, very collectible as paratrooper helmet in very fine condition. Sorry staff, devil made me do it!
Hmmm...anyone know of a German Airborne unit near Verdun in WWII? I don't think much happened near Verdun till Patton rolled by with the US III Army. I don't think Germany had much airlift capacity by then - could the Airborne have been deployed as regular ground troops by then and kept their distinctive helmets? Just me rambling here.
Chris, you hit it right on the head. Many pix confirm it.
Hey everyone,
Thank you for all the comments and help.
I'll search for more informations about Patton 3rd Army
Some soldiers liked to write words in their helmets in order to remenber friends, family, battles, etc. Maybe the helmet belonged to an officer who was in Verdum as a young soldier...who knows
