It was my great grandfather's I was told. He used it for an ink well. It is quite beautiful. The bottom is stone.
I put up a close up of the only area I can see that might be a mark.
It used to look more pewter in color.
    Any input is appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Vanda

THAT is the cutest inkwell I've ever seen! Whatever you do, don't clean it. :-)

      Very charming piece!
It seems to be rather a match holder, striker beeing the textured part of the barrel circles!
      Inkwells had lids.

I will look up match holder - Thank you
Some inkwells were just for dipping ink - I have seen them on the internet - few and far between. Not right for candle -

      Kyratango -

Found two similar not exact - or as perfectly done a match holder with a striker. Amazing! Thank you !

"A sculptured bronze match holder with striker modeled in the form of a fox caught in a trap. Continental origin. Mid to late 19th century. Size: 4.25 inches length x 2.25 inches height x 3 inches depth. Excellent as-found condition. The fox is standing amidst foliage by a tree stump (which serves as the match holder) with his left fore paw caught in a metal snare. His expression displays the distress caused by his predicament. The fox is cast separately and attached to the base."
