As soon as I spotted this incredible lamp I KNEW I simply "had" to have it even though it exceeded my budget, and decided to sell off four really nice but "lesser" objects in order to be able to pay for it. Best decision I ever made!
It measures 18 1/2 x 9 x 4.7 inches, and is made entirely of bronze (it weighs about 12 lbs.!). The shade is hand hammered brass, and the beautiful patina is all original. It's signed "Wetzel", which is either German or Austrian, but I've been unable to find anything whatsoever about this incredibly talented sculptor on Google! The only thing that makes any sense to me is that he must have suddenly and unexpectedly passed away shortly after designing this lamp, because (as you can see) he was SO talented that he would surely have become quite famous.

If anyone out there in CollectorLand can tell me anything at all about him I'd really appreciate it; but when you try the internet search engines the ONLY thing that comes up are photos of THIS lamp...

    Thanks for looking!

love, love, love, love it.................I really love it !!

Wonderful lamp! It is probably a piano lamp given the low, extended profile.
    6. Hyp-storian, 9 years ago
I agree completely, Cogito. The only thing that puzzles me is that I've been unable to
find ANY info whatsoever about Wetzel. Doesn't make me love (LOVE!!) this any less, but I was hoping to maybe find other items also designed by him...
    7. cogito cogito, 9 years ago
Maybe Wetzel references the foundry or manufacturer?
    8. Hyp-storian, 9 years ago
      Cogito,

That's a thought, but it does look like a printed (incised in the bronze) "signature",
and you'd think that multiple Google searches (with various combinations of "Wetzel bronze", "Wetzel art nouveau", etc., etc.) would turn up something else aside from photos of this exact same lamp (all taken by the seller I bought it from).

Not only are there no other examples to be found of this lamp, but nothing else whatsoever from a "Wetzel" at all. I even tried Googling "Wetsel" just in case it was spelled incorrectly on the lamp.....

Can you post the mark? Maybe different eyes will see something different in the Spelling of the mark?? One never knows....

This is SUCH a Stunning Piece !!!!!!!!!!!

      Hi Antiquerose,

I just replaced the last photo with one that shows the signature. It's actually a lot easier to see in person (the photos isn't too great), but if you enlarge the photo it clearly reads "WETZEL".
Thanks for your comment, my wife and I both think it's stunning too!
Just wish somebody knew something (anything!) about the artist!

I found the exact same lamp base, but the lamp part went straight up instead of out. Here is the link to the second lamp: https://lot-tissimo.com/de/i/10450860/p/13/ (Copy and paste this address and it will pull up this lamp on Pinterest. I've copied the description from Pinterest and then translated it.
Pinterest Description: Tischlampe Jugendstil um 1900, Bronze gegossen und dunkelbraun patiniert, signiert Wetzel, figürli
Translation: Table lamp Jugendstil around 1900, bronze cast and dark brown patinated, signed Wetzel, figürli
Click on the Pinterest picture & it will take you to a German Auction website with a little more information...but not much. I've copied and translated this info as well.
      Website Information: Tischlampe Jugendstil

You might be able to contact the Auction House and ask if they can send you the published Auction Catalogue for this item, or thy can point you in the right direction.
      Hope this helps...Kathy
      P.S. I used Google Translate - I don't know German!!! ;-D
