A contemporary piece of glass from Japan by glass artist Shujiro Wada.
Born in 1967 Shujiro worked at Sanyu Glass from 1996 to 1999, then moved to Glass Maniacs around 2000.
In 2002 he moved to Toyama Glass Studio and this vase has been made there.
Toyama is the capital of Toyama Prefecture, central Honshu, and is an established glass making hot spot. The city hosts a specialist glass school, The Toyama City Institute of Glass Art .
Although this vase looks very zebra-ish it is actually much more than a black/white stripe.
The lighter glass is cream with gold inclusions that in light look fab against the black.
It is typically Japanese in that it is cased in clear, has a ground base, and a hot finished rim. Height 25.5cm
When I look at works like this I think it could only have been made by a Japanese artist.
If you were to ask me why I think that I would probably just shrug my shoulders, but after looking at lots of Japanese glass it always has that "thing".
If only I knew what the "thing" was!
The gold sand is the "thing" in this vase!
its gorgeous, it looks like sand and crystals in those bottle they used o sell on the beach at Bournemouth ...lovely
The close up is astonishing Karen, particularly when your head tells you what you are seeing is smooth! Aaah, that indefinable 'thing' that comes with study, and or experience.
I love that "thing", what I call ineffable. :) Another beauty, Karen. :)
Outstanding Vase Karen!! I agree with Ivonne... the gold aventurine is what makes it a standout in my opinion!
stirking vase and shape,color combo!!
typo striking !! I meant!!
Thing says thanks Ivonne.
Never been to Bournemouth but I know you like it Anne. Thanks
Peggy you are correct with the indefinable thing. Thanks for your appreciation.
Thanks Katherine for loving this AND knowing what I mean!
The Japanese love a bit of bling Rick.....this one more subtle than some. Thanks.
Much thanks Snae. Sorry, Sean
The wowfactor is there. Very nice!
