Can anyone tell me anything about this writing table? Pin/Scallop drawer, original hardware, was my grandfather's (he was born in 1880). However, we don't know the story as to how he acquired this. Thanks.
Your picture #2 shows pin and cove dovetail joints. Seldom seen on here. They were common during the 1880's and never became popular because of the work required. In 1890's machine cut dovetails came to be and the process changed forever.
I won't comment on the other pictures but I do believe this piece is either original or one hell of a reproduction (which I doubt). The picture isn't terribly clear but the craftsmanship looks old time and totally well done.
Where did your grandfather live if I may ask? The state is close enough.
Thank you so much for the info, we appreciate it. My grandfather was from Louisiana, this desk has been in the family for almost a hundred years, possibly longer-just wish we'd have asked questions while we had the chance.
Drawer pull looks probably French.

Have you considered Spanish (oak or chestnut wood?) because the legs appear 'turned' not band sawn, also the height if around 29H x 53w x 24D could have been known as a Sofa Table in the late 1800's, early 1900's.
