Ok. I am trying to learn about glass and found this recently and thought it might be a good piece to try and glean some information and learn something. So, I have some questions for you glass experty people as I can't figure some things out from looking at this (because I don't know what I am supposed to be looking for!).

Firstly, is this hand made or moulded? I'm guessing hand made as I can't see how you could add the blue detailing if it was moulded, as it appears to be embedded within the vase. Just my best guess.

Secondly, was it made yesterday or 50 years ago. Looking at the base there seems to be quite a bit of wear and tear so I'm guessing not yesterday, but how old I have no clue.

Thirdly, if it was hand made, should the pontil not be visible? Again, I don't know.

So as you can see from the above, there is lots I don't know and precious little I do. If anyone could enlighten me I would be very grateful. Thanks!

I don't know, either, but it's a really pretty vase.

Very pretty vase, agree with Efesgirl. One of our glass experts here may be able to help. :)

Might try looking under *Frosted* or *Satin Glass* for some help

I will have a go at some answers for you Hamish, although I am not the most knowledgeable. Really nicely made vase BTW.
I think you are right that it has some age but this style was popular from the 80s so about then I think. It was likely mouth blown, possibly placed in a mould for a consistent shape, and the rim hand worked to give it the flutes.
I can't tell you who made it but I think it is Euro.
Pontil - there would have been a pontil scar but they can be removed, usually by grinding or flame finishing. Looking at this base it looks very flat so I think it has been ground. The acid finish to make this vase satin has made the ground base less noticeable.

All great questions you asked, so you know more than you think!

Thanks everyone, and thanks for the information Karen, you're a star. Complicated this glass malarkey, and even more so when most things have no makers marks. I think it is likely I will never know who made this thing! It's odd, you'd think if you made something aesthetically pleasing and put so much time and effort into it you would want people to know you made it. I guess some have identifying stickers that come off over time.
