This is a vintage physician scale removed from a school gym being torn down. The top ornate part seems to be cast iron while the rest is metal. Painted black with a gold line for design, it's really beautiful. I've used it as a plant stand for years, then more recently put it in my guest bathroom with a large wicker basket on it to act as a clothes' tree and hamper.
The top part which does seem to have brass in it does have the marking
Buffalo Scale Company stamped into it but unclear if they just made the upper scale part or if the entire scale is made by them. Unsure of the exact age?

      Excerpt from:
      http://bechsed.nylearns.org/pdf/low/The%20Beginning%20of%20Buffalo%20Industry.pdf
"The Buffalo Scale Company, which was organized in 1860, was soon shipping scales to all parts of the world. In the 1880's the company made an average of 19,000 scales a year. A large number of these were bought by the United States Government, as standard equipment. As the company grew, it specialized in heavy-type weighers such as railway truck, motor truck, wagon, hopper, and platform scales."

Hmm... I will see if I can figure out why they made this style so ornate?? I will look into that. Thank you.
