I re-purpose old things and found this in a trading depot. It was covered in rust, I have been cleaning it up but have no idea what it is. I am thinking it is some sort of tool. It is 13 inches long, 3 inches wide at the bottom, and weighs a little over two pounds, I believe it is iron.

Any help with what it is and possible age would be greatly appreciated.

An interesting piece, my first impression is that it is a speculum used by veterinarian. The speculum is used to hold open the mouth when you file an animals teeth. It is quite bulky, so maybe my speculum theory is all wrong. Anyhow, it is a great piece and I know that there are very knowledgeable people on C.W. who will come up with the proper answer. Thanks for posting it!!

Thank you for taking a look at my piece. Your right it is bulky it weighs a little over two pounds. I looked up veterinarian speculums, I could not find any thing similar to my piece. I was thinking maybe it could be a tool that used a strap in some way around the two bottom pieces. Thank you again for your thoughts, I will keep hunting. If I figure it out I will let you know what the mystery piece is.

It might be a blacksmith's bending tool, although they're usually open on one side. Are the two pins firmly attached? Are they removable (is it a cotter pin I see)? Do they spin/roll in their mounts?
