My deceased neighbor gave this to me in 1997. He was a 90 yrs. old retired SFFD Firefighter. It is a Cairns & Brothers leather helmet. I would appreciate it if anyone could give me additional info on it such as age, use (SFFD Salvage Co.?), rarity & value. Thanks

Hi Dave, Is there anyway you can send me close up pics of the helmet? I need to see disc that is on the inside very top of crown to help date this piece. knewbomb@sbcglobal.net

Were you able to find the information you wanted?

My grandfather was in the Salvage 2 (SFFD) in the late 1940s. I have his helmet. Yours looks to be re-painted a brighter shade of red, with hand-painted "Salvage" on the shield. My father had a new one made from a guy in Berkeley. My father is also a Ret. SFFD, as was my great-grandfather... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1TUvuZ6GVM

I believe the Salvage units were disbanded in the mid 70s to mid 80s...
