Just purchased these on a trip in Virginia emporium they are so well made for tiny baskets the lady who sold them knew nothing about them looking for some help I was so curious they have a preserve coating on them maybe for protection any idea where they came from? Not sure how old they are thanks for any ideas
They are copies, made for export, of traditional Chinese baskets.
Thank You for the comment on the item I have not been able to find these on line anywhere so I am glad you responded any idea of age or the coating used.
I'd say probably no more than 20 years old.
Chinese basket makers were one of the first to use a type of resin to coat their baskets, and it is a technique used all over the world.
The material to coat the baskets is as varied as the material used to make the baskets. Originally, it was all local, but now, it's difficult to say what is being used, where it originated, or if it's a natural or man-made substance. I wouldn't trust it as being food-safe, which it originally was intended to be.
THANKS AGAIN Canyon Road you have helped me so much. I thought they looked well made had no idea they were an import. I will not use them for food only have them on a shelf. Thanks again for your great help Pat
