I have acquired what appears to be either a weighing or maybe a measuring implement. It looks commercial, is made of iron, is inscribed MAS 1835, has various hooks and a ratchet mechanism that allows it to be extended. When un-extended it is 42" or 106 cms, and extended it is 61" or 155 cms. Does anyone know what this is please? Thanks,Roger
This tool is called a trammel. Usually six to twelve inches long it was used to raise or lower a betty lamp. The example you have is HUGE ! Perhaps to hold a pot over a fire for cooking. A signed and dated one like yours is most rare !

The Trammel is now hanging in the shop with a brief write-up as to its use.
