Our Dad brought this home from WWII, there used to be a matching one, but we think it got broken. He always said it was valuable. It is beautiful craftsmanship & wood, but why it lifts up, why are there little metal half circles always eluded me. If someone knows more I would appreciate it.

    It is 9" across x 3.25" tall.

    Thank You.

      Beautiful deco object!

Suspect it is some form of cigarette/ tobacco box or dispenser. The biggest indicator of such a use are the removable metal trays-- ash trays.

I have seen some very elaborate designs for these in the 1930s- 40s.

Thank you. That makes sense now. It is the beautiful wood & craftsmanship that I always found beautiful. Intriguing why it lifts up, but just more beautiful wood.
      Thanks You Scott.
